Pollen is a powdery substance produced by seed plants. It consists of pollen grains (highly reduced microgametophytes), which produce male gametes (sperm cells). Anywhere between 15 per cent and 25 per cent of Canadians experience allergies to one or more types of pollen.

The tree pollen season starts earlier in warmer provinces, however. For example, trees start pollinating in February in British Columbia.  The grass pollen season typically starts mid-May and lasts until the end of July and ragweed season starts mid-August and lasts until mid-October or the first heavy frost.
