Using Fujian forest wood as raw material, different types of activated carbon are produced by physical and chemical methods. The high quality wood based activated carbon is a special fine microstructure, characterized by fine micropore, large surface area, high adherence strength, and fast filtering speed. Wood-base activated carbon is made by treatment of phosphorus acid, water steam and zinc chloride. In the sugar industry active carbons are mainly used to remove coloring matter from syrups, thus giving the sugar a better appearance and also improving markedly its processing properties. Treatment with active carbons helps in removing surface-active agents and colloidal substances, raising their surface tension and decreasing their viscosity. This leads to higher rates of sugar crystallization and improved separation of syrups from crystals by centrifugation.
